How the Partner Visa Process Works in Australia – Step-by-Step Guide

The Australian Partner Visa allows spouses or de facto partners of Australian citizens, permanent residents, or eligible New Zealand citizens to live in Australia. While it can open the door to a new life with your loved one, the process can be complicated. This guide breaks down the Partner Visa process into simple steps.

Step 1: Check Your Eligibility

You must be married or in a de facto relationship with your partner, and your relationship must be genuine and ongoing. You’ll need evidence such as joint financial documents, photos, and travel records.

Step 2: Choose the Right Visa Subclass

The Partner Visa is usually applied for as a Subclass 820/801 (onshore) or Subclass 309/100 (offshore). Your choice depends on your location at the time of application.

Step 3: Gather Supporting Evidence

Your relationship evidence is critical. This can include joint bank accounts, lease agreements, social media interactions, and statutory declarations from friends and family.

Step 4: Submit Your Application

Applications are lodged online through the Department of Home Affairs portal. You must pay the visa fee and upload all relevant documents.

Step 5: Temporary Visa Grant (820 or 309)

You’ll receive a temporary visa first, which allows you to stay in Australia while awaiting your permanent visa decision.

Step 6: Permanent Visa Assessment (801 or 100)

After two years, your relationship will be reassessed. If approved, you’ll receive your permanent residency visa.

Partner visas require careful preparation, strong evidence, and patience. With the right guidance, you can navigate the process smoothly and focus on building your future together in Australia.
